About Us

Newman_525Bedford Chamber Concerts presents great music of the baroque, classical and romantic eras, spiced occasionally with music of the twentieth century or new music composed by our Music Director, Anthony Newman.

Mr. Newman, one of America’s leading classical musicians, is
internationally recognized for his contributions as organist, harpsichordist, composer, conductor, musicologist and Bach specialist. Among more than 170 recordings, his performance of Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto was named Stereo Review’s “Record of the Year” in 1989 and his collaboration with Wynton Marsalis, In Gabriel’s Garden, in which Mr. Newman conducted the English Chamber Orchestra, was the best-selling classical CD of 1997. He has been lauded as the “high priest of the harpsichord” by Time Magazine and “high priest of Bach” by Mr. Marsalis.

Since Bedford Chamber Concerts’ inaugural season in 2000-2001, performances have been held in the acoustically excellent Fellowship Room of Saint Matthew’s Church in Bedford, New York. A special feature of our concerts is that the performance space holds a maximum of about one hundred and seventy-five people, allowing chamber music to be performed in the intimate setting the composers intended.

As conductor and keyboardist, Anthony Newman encourages the impromptu ornamentation that baroque composers expected, and as composer he occasionally arranges great orchestral compositions so they can be successfully performed by smaller ensembles. Even the most familiar compositions reveal exciting new dimensions.

Concert programs reflect a broad spectrum of music periods, styles, and genres. Recent seasons featured the following pieces:

  • The complete Brandenburg Concertos by Bach
  • Beethoven’s second, third, and seventh symphonies transcribed for chamber ensemble
  • Handel’s Water Music
  • A chamber performance of Handel’s opera Julius Caesar
  • Schubert’s “Trout” and String Quintets
  • Guitar music by Boccherini and Vivaldi
  • Piano and flute concerti by Mozart
  • Beethoven’s “Archduke”Trio and various Beethoven violin sonatas
  • Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue
  • Vivaldi’s Four Seasons

Complimentary refreshments are served at intermission and parking is both ample and free.

We welcome you to experience “the standards of Lincoln Center in the heart of Bedford.”
